Today it was time to test out the binaural recording process at one of the locations I will be using for the final production phase. This was a chance to hear how the microphones coped with high winds and quick movements.
After reviewing the recordings I was really surprised at the quality of the results given that the winds were blowing in excess of 40 mph. EQ was used to roll off some of the frequencies below 250Hz which helped eliminate some of the overpowering wind noise. Around 6dB of boost was applied to 5kHz to enhance front localisation and 8kHz was boosted to enhance height cues (Rumsey 2003, p.25)
Again headphones must be worn to appreciated the spatial cues offered by this recording technique. Towards the end of the video where the camera is looking back up the hill you can clearly hear skiers and boarders passing and disappearing behind. There is also shouting from behind and to the left as well as the hum of the ski tow to the right.
A final video of this module combining most of the techniques and processes required for the final production.
